キリストの二つのイメージ

Good morning, everyone. Thank you for your invitation and thank you for your welcome. It is good to be worshipping with you here in St. Stephen's Church, and it is a privilege to be preaching at your Eucharist this morning.
おはようございます。温かく迎え入れて下り、ありがとうございます。ここ聖ステパノ教会で共に礼拝出来ることは素晴らしいことであり、今朝の聖餐式の説教をさせて頂けることは大きな恵みでございます。
In the words of Psalm 19, verse 14, I pray that the words of mouth and the meditations of all our hearts may be acceptable to the Lord, who is our rock and our redeemer.
詩編１９編１４節「主よ、私の岩、私の購い主。私の口の言葉と心の思いがみ心にかないますように」
As I think you know, I am on sabbatical from my duties in the Church of England, where I lead the church in the village of Great Bentley and co-ordinate the work of fifteen other parishes and their clergy in the area.
みなさんご存じの通り、私は今、英国教会での私の務め、つまりグレートベントレー村の教会を司牧すること、そして１５の他の教会、教役者との協働を離れて研究休暇中であります。
Great Bentley is a very special village. This year it hasgiven an award for being the best village in Great Britain. This is because it has a very strong community life. At the heart of this life is the Christian community which worships in our beautiful 900 year old parish church.
グレートベントレーは特別な村です。今年、英国において村の中の村、ベストな村としての賞を頂きました。それはとても強い共同体生活がここにはあるからです。この生活の中心は９００歳になる私達の美しい教会での礼拝を通したクリスチャンコミュニティーです。
Before Great Bentley, I led a team of churches and clergy near the port of Southampton for ten years. Before that, I worked with a team of clergy in London. But, before I trained for the priesthood I trained to be an architect. My sabbatical combines these two careers. It is about bringing the love of God and the love of art and architecture more closely together in my spiritual life.
私はグレートベントレーに来る前、１０年間サウザンプトンの港近くで、教会や教役者チームのリーダーをしていました。その前は、ロンドンで教役者チームと一緒に働いていました。しかし、私が司祭になる訓練を受ける前、建築家になる為のトレーニングを受けていました。今回の研究休暇ではこの二つの経験を併せようと思っています。そのことは私の霊的な生活の中に、神の愛と芸術や建築の愛が、より親密に交じり合うことをもたらすことでしょう。
Looking at art and architecture can move me very deeply. When that happens, God has a lovely way of opening my eyes to his presence, surprising me with fresh ideas and leading me into prayer and praise. My sabbatical is providing an opportunity for all that.
芸術や建築を眺めることによって、私はとても深く感動させられます。それが起こる時、神は彼の存在に目を開かせる素敵な方法を持っています。つまり新鮮なアイデアをもって私を驚かせ、祈りと賛美へと私をいざなうのです。今回の研究休暇はそのすべての為の機会を与えてくれることでしょう。
This sermon was written before I left home and emailed to Kyoto for translation. Perhaps, in conversations after the service, I may be able to tell you about my more recent experiences. But this morning I want to tell you about two images of Jesus Christ - the first a picture and the second a sculpture.
この説教は翻訳のために、家を離れる前に書き、Eメールで京都に送ったものです。多分、礼拝後のおしゃべりの中で、最近の経験をお話しすることが出来るかもしれません。しかし、今朝は二つのイエスのイメージについて語りたいと思います。一つ目は肖像画、二番目は彫刻です。
The first was made by an artist called Ian Johnson for his parish church. He lives in a little village in the North of England. To celebrate the Millennium, he gave every villager a disposable camera with which to take pictures of their surroundings.
一つ目はイアン・ジョンソンと言う人の作で彼の教会のために描かれたものです。彼は英国北部の小さな村に住んでいます。新しい世紀を祝うために、彼はすべての村人に彼／彼女らの周りを写真に撮るようにと使い捨てカメラを送りました。
Then he took their 2800 individual pictures and stuck them all together on a board, 2 metres high and 1.5 metres wide. When you are close to the board you see only the individual images of people, animals, signposts, houses, landscapes, and even a baby being baptized. But, when you step back, all those little images merge together and become the face of Jesus Christ.
そして２８００もの写真を受け取り、高さ２メートル、幅１．５メートルの一枚の板に全部張り付けました。その板に近づいてみると、人や動物、道しるべ、住宅、風景や、洗礼を受ける赤ちゃんまでもがただ別々のものにしか見えません。しかし、後ろに下がってみるとこれらすべての小さなイメージは一つに溶け合い、イエス・キリストの顔になります。
I have brought a copy for you to see. It may not be great art but it is great theology! Don't worry if you can't see it. Just imagine it. This face in this picture is European. Jesus wasn't European but that doesn't matter. All over the world Christians paint Jesus with the same features as their neighbours, and that is great theology too.
ここにそのコピーがあります。偉大な芸術じゃないかもしれませんが、偉大な神学です。もし見えなくても心配しないで下さい。ただ想像してみてください。この写真の中のこの顔はヨーロッパ人です。イエスはヨーロッパ人ではありませんでしたが、それは問題ではありません。世界中のクリスチャンが自分達の隣人に似せてイエスを描いているのです。そしてそれも又偉大な神学なのです。
In Matthew Chapter 25, verse 40, Jesus says, "Whatever you do for even the least of humanity, you do for me." So there is a very real sense that Jesus Christ is looking through the eyes of every face we meet. We see him inviting us to love and serve God in them, as we obey his command to love our neighbour as ourselves.
マタイによる福音書２５章４０節、イエスは言います。「これらの最も小さくされた人々の一人にしたことは、私にしてくれたことなのですよ」と。私達が出会うすべての人々の目を通して、イエス・キリストが見ておられるのだという現実の感覚があるのです。
This picture of the face of Jesus tells us that we can encounter him in every person and situation we meet and in every place we go.
このイエスの顔の写真は、私達が出会うあらゆる人や状況の中で、また私達がおもむくあらゆる場所で、イエスに遭遇することが出来るんだと言うことを私達に告げているのです。
There is no face and no place from which Jesus Christ is absent. He is Lord of all. In today's reading from St. John's Gospel we heard Jesus preparing his disciples for his Ascension to his throne in the Kingdom of Heaven. And he tells them to be glad. Until then he had been present with them wherever he walked in his human body. But now, by his Holy Spirit, his presence would be universal.
イエス・キリスト不在の顔や場所はありません。彼はすべてのものの主です。今日のヨハネによる福音書で、イエスが弟子達に語る、神の国の座に昇天するという説教を聞きました。そして彼は弟子達に喜ぶように語ります。その時までイエスは人間の体をもって歩き、弟子達と共におりましたが、今やイエスは聖霊として世界中に存在しているのです。
We meet him most obviously in the faces of good people and happy situations. It can be harder to find him in all that is sad and painful and evil. "Where is Jesus Christ in all this?" we may ask when we are faced with tragedy and with the consequences of sin. And the answer is that he is there, right at the heart of it, crucified.
私達は幸福な人達の表情の中で、そして幸せな状況の中で最も明白にイエスに出会います。悲しみや痛み、悪魔性がはびこる所に彼を見出すことは至難の業です。「こんな状況のどこにイエス・キリストはいるの？」。私達が悲劇や罪がもたらすものに直面する時、そう問い掛けるかもしれません。答えは彼はそこにいる、その苦しみのちょうど真ん中にいる、ということです。
Because he is present, in his great love for us, sharing our pain, crying with us and crying for us at the very heart of our human predicament, we can find new faith and hope in him. We meet him reaching out to us in compassion - longing for our healing, our liberation, our salvation - sowing, even in the depth of sin and death, the seeds of our new life.
彼は存在しておられるから、私達への大きな愛の中に、私達の痛みを分かち合いながら、私達人間の苦境の直中で私達のために、私達と共に泣いておられるから、私達は彼の中に新たな信仰と希望を見出すのです。私達は、私達の癒し、解放、救いを願い求め、罪や死の深みでさえ私達の新しい命の種を撒いて下さるという共感によって近づいて下さる彼に出会います。
And because the crucified Christ who shares our Good Fridays is also the risen Christ, conqueror of sin and death, we know that he can raise us up to new life in him. When we turn to him in repentance and faith, he can transform our Good Fridays with all the love and joy and peace of his Easter morning.
そして、私達の受難の時を分かち合われる苦難のキリストが、また罪と死に打ち勝たれた復活のキリストであるから、私達は彼が彼の内に私達を新しい命へと引き上げて下さることを知っています。悔い改めと信仰によって彼に立ち返る時、彼は私達の受難の時を、彼のもたらした復活の朝の愛と喜びと平和の時へと変容させて下さるのです。
So it was that the prophet Joel, in today's reading from the Old Testament, could bring a message of hope to the Israelites in a time of great hardship and trouble. Joel opened their eyes to the presence of God amongst them as their liberator and redeemer. And God said to them, "You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I, the Lord, am your God and there is no other."
それは、今日の旧約聖書朗読のように、大いなる苦難の直中でイスラエル人に希望のメッセージをもたらすことが出来た預言者ヨエルのようです。ヨエルは彼／彼女らの解放者また贖い主として彼／彼女達の直中にいる神の臨在へと人々の目を開きました。「あなたがたは私がイスラエルの直中にいることを知るだろう。そして私が主、私をおいて他にあなたがたの神はいないと言うことを知るだろう」
So the picture of the face of Jesus Christ, created from all those photos of people and places, tells us to open our eyes and to recognize him in all the people and situations that we meet. And it encourages us to bring his compassion, his healing, his salvation, and his just and gentle rule into the lives of those around us.
ゆえに、これらすべての人や場所の写真から作られたイエス・キリストの顔の写真は、私達の目を開き、私達が出会うすべての人や状況の中にイエスがいることに気づくように語りかけます。そのことはイエスの情熱、イエスの癒し、イエスの救い、イエスの正義と柔和さが充満する在り方を私達の周りにいる人々の生活にもたらすようにと、私達を励ますのです。
Which brings us to our second image of Christ - a life-size figure of Jesus, with his arms reaching out, carved in stone outside a little village church in France.
二番目のキリストのイメージは、フランスの小さな村の教会の外にある、石の、腕を伸ばした等身大のイエスの彫像です。
Normally it is a very peaceful village but, for a few hours in the 2nd World War, it became a battleground. The two armies retreated and advanced. When the fighting in the village had stopped and the sound of the guns had moved away, the surviving villagers emerged from their cellars to find parts of their village in ruins.
普段はとても平和な村、しかし第二次世界大戦の数時間の間に、そこは戦場と化しました。二個の軍隊が攻防を繰り返しました。村での戦闘が止み、銃声が消えた時、生き残った村人達が地下室から現れ、廃虚の中で村の傷跡を目の当たりにしました。
Outside the church they found that the statue of Christ had shared in the devastation. It too was smashed. They collected up the broken pieces and, when they set about rebuilding their village, they decided to rebuild their statue too. Carefully they stuck all the pieces together and filled the cracks. But there was one part which was beyond restoration - the hands were smashed beyond repair.
教会の外で、彼／彼女らはキリストの像が荒れ果てた中でバラバラになっているのを発見しました。粉々だでした。破片の一つ一つを集め、村が再建される時、彼／彼女らはキリストの像も再建することを決めたのです。すべての破片は丁寧に張り合わされ、割れ目がふさがれていきました。しかし、一つの部分、腕が修復出来なかったのです。
Some people wanted to give up and to buy a new sculpture. But the villagers had come to love this statue, which had shared so much of their lives - even in the horrors of war. Then one of them made a wise suggestion which everyone accepted. And so today, outside the church in this little village, stands a statue of Jesus Christ. The arms reach out in love for the world but the hands are still missing.
Carved on the base of the statue are these words: "I have no hands but your hands."
ある人は諦めて新しい彫像を買おうとしました。でも、村人は彼／彼女達の生活を分かち合い、しかも戦争中の悲惨な中にあってもそうであったこの像を愛していました。その時、その中の一人がみんなが同意するいいアイデアを出しました。今日、この小さな村の教会の外に、イエス・キリストの像が立っているのはその為です。その腕は愛に満たされて世界へと差し伸べられています。その腕は未だにないままですが。その像の台座には次のような言葉が刻まれています。「私には自分の腕はないけれど、あなたがたの腕があります」。
We are the body of Christ. We meet around the altar table this morning to hear his words at the breaking of the bread: "This is my body, broken for you." We each receive our piece of that broken body as a sign that we belong together in him. Though we are many we are one body because we all share in the one bread. We are the body of Christ. "In the one Spirit we have all been baptized into one body."
私達はキリストの体です。私達は今朝、パンを裂く時に語られるキリストの言葉を聞くために聖卓のまわりで出会います。「これは私の体、あなたのために裂かれる私の体」。私達はイエスの内にともにあるしるしとして私達の裂かれた体の破片を互いに受け取ります。私達は多くいても一つの体です。なぜなら一つのパンを分かち合うからです。私達はキリストの体です。「一つの霊によって、一つの体として洗礼を受けているのです」。
The body has many different parts. Each hand is made up of many different bones, ligaments, muscle and skin tissues, veins, arteries, nails and nerves. The print of every finger is unique. In all the richness and diversity in which God created us, each and every one of us has our unique and individual part to play within the body of Christ. He has no hands but our hands. He is depending upon every member of his church in every corner of this building, in every corner of his world, to reach out and touch his people with his love.
体は多くの部分からなっています。それぞれの腕は多くの異なった骨、靱帯、筋肉、皮膚組織、静脈、動脈、爪、神経から出来ています。それぞれの指紋もユニークです。神が私達を想像された豊かさ、多様さの中に、それぞれがキリストの体を担う、ユニークさと個性があるのです。キリストは自分の手ではなく、私達の手を持っているのです。キリストは愛を持って人々に出会い触れるために、この建物のあらゆる場所で、彼の世界のすべての場所で、彼の教会のすべてのメンバーにより頼み続けているのです。
So it is not just a matter of our seeing the face of Christ when we look into the eyes of others. It is important that those who look into our eyes should see his love shining out through us. As he has loved us, so we in turn are called to love others in his name.
だから、他の人の目を見る時、単にキリストの顔を眺めているというだけではないのです。私達の目を見ている人々は私達を通して輝き出しているキリストの愛を見ているということが重要なのです。キリストが私達を愛されているように、彼によって私達は他者を愛するようにと呼び出されているのです。
We cannot do that in our own strength. We can only act as his hands by his grace. And so in John's Gospel Chapter 20, verses 21 and 22, the risen Christ breathes on his disciples and says, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me so I send you... Receive the Holy Spirit". As the Father sent him, so Jesus sends us to be incarnate in his world as a channel of his peace.
私達は自分の力ではそれを行えません。私達は彼の恵みによってキリストの腕として働けるのです。ヨハネ福音書２０章２１，２２節、よみがえりのキリストは弟子達に息を吹きかけて言われました。「平和があなた方と共にありますように。父なる神が私を遣わされたように、私もあなた方を遣わそう。聖霊を受けなさい」。父なる神がイエスを送られたように、イエスは彼の平和の器として彼の世界で新しい命を得させるために私達を送られます。
So we pray for the Holy Spirit to work in and through us. In the words of St. Francis:
ゆえに私達の中で、私達を通して聖霊が働かれるように聖フランシスの祈りを祈ります。
"Lord, make us instruments of your peace; where there is hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.
「主よ、私達をあなたの平和の道具にして下さい。憎しみのある所に愛を、不正義のある所に赦しを、分裂のある所に一致を、疑いのある所に信頼を、絶望のある所に希望を、やみに閉ざされている所に光を、悲しみのある所に喜びをもたらす者にして下さい。
It is by his grace that God will enable us to spread the good news of his love in our words and in our deeds. Since we can only do that by his grace, we can only do it to his glory.
私達が言葉と行いで神の愛の素晴らしい訪れを伝える事が出来るようにして下さるのは、あなたの恵みのおかげです。あなたの恵みのおかげでそれが行えるから、私達は神様の栄光の為にそれを行う事だけが可能です。
Our reading today from the Acts of the Apostles makes that very clear. Paul and Barnabas might have been tempted to accept the adulation of the crowds who witnessed the crippled man raised up by the power of Christ at work in them. Pride is always a temptation. When things are going right it is only human to want some of the glory.
今日読まれました使徒言行録はそのことを明らかにします。パウロとバルナバは群衆の中でキリストの力によって手足の不自由な人を起き上がらせた場面で、それを見ていた人々の賞賛を我が物にしようとする誘惑にかられていたかもしれません。自慢はいつも誘惑です。物事が順調な時、人間だけが栄光を欲しがるのです。
But Paul and Barnabas were quick to give all the glory to God. They too were mere mortals who had been raised up from sin by faith in Jesus Christ. So, in all humility, Barnabas and Paul wanted to share that good news with others so that they too could be raised up to new life in him. Jesus calls us to do the same.
しかし、パウロとバルナバはすべての栄光を即座に神に帰しました。彼ら二人はイエス・キリストへの信仰によって罪から救い上げられた人間に過ぎません。だから、謙遜の内に、イエスにおける新しい命に生きるために、バルナバとパウロは他の者と良き訪れを分かち合ったのです。イエスは同じようにしなさいと私達を招いておられるのです。
So let us remember those two images of Christ. Let us look with new confidence for Jesus Christ in all the faces and places around us. Let us recognize him and love him and serve him wherever we go and whoever we meet. Let us remember that we all have our part to play in the body of Christ. He has no hands but our hands. By his grace and to his glory, let us reach out and touch them with his love. Amen.
キリストの二つのイメージを思い出しましょう。私達の周りの顔や場所すべての中におられるイエス・キリストへの新しい信頼を持って眺めてみましょう。私達が行く所どこででも、私達が出会うどんな人の中にもおられるイエスに気づき、愛し、仕えましょう。私達がキリストの体をかたち作っている事を思い出しましょう。彼は私達の腕以外に自分の手を持っていないのです。彼の恵みによって、彼の栄光のために、彼の愛によって人々に出会い、触れ合いましょう。アーメン
